ABOUT DR. FORTEITH

Doris_Fortheith12801.jpg

I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with experience treating anxiety, depression, personal and professional performance issues, self-esteem concerns, and other problems that impact daily life. While I have worked extensively with children and adolescents, my primary focus is individual therapy with teenagers, college-aged young adults, and adults. I run a number of groups and psycho-educational workshops for adults and teenagers. Please see my Treatment & Services page for more information.

I have worked in the clinical field for more than 20 years. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Williams College, a Master of Education degree in Mental Health Counseling from Cambridge College, and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology. I have practiced therapy in Counseling Centers at Bentley College, Roger Williams University, and Boston College. My post-graduate work as a Behavior Consultant with the Department of Developmental Services involved clinical treatment of adults with developmental disabilities. I have worked in group practice specializing in the clinical care of children and families and now see patients in my solo practice.

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

I'm here to listen with compassion and respect, and to help you achieve key insights. In therapy, we’ll work together to resolve current problems by addressing disruptive patterns of thinking and behavior. This process is not always easy, but it can be rewarding and life-changing. I will help you adjust your responses to stressors and provide you with valuable tools to cope with life’s obstacles. I believe the key to enhanced emotional wellness rests within you.

PARENTING CONSULTATION

Every parent struggles sometimes with parenting choices, especially when faced with challenging behaviors by their child. Occasionally, even the most informed parents need some guidance. I help parents understand their child's behavior from a different perspective and collaborate to develop the best parenting strategies to address whatever needs their child may have.

BEHAVIOR CONSULTATION

I offer Behavior Consultation services for parents and caregivers struggling to manage their child or loved one's difficult or disruptive behaviors. Consults aim to examine and understand the root of problematic behaviors in order to develop effective strategies for improving adaptive functioning and ensuring success in all areas of the person's life, whether it is school, work, day programs, or home.
Consultation services do not involve therapy and are based on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), and Behavior Therapy principles.

WORKSHOPS & GROUPS

Please know that groups are temporarily paused but if you are interested in attending one of my groups or workshops, please contact me to learn more about details and scheduling. Workshops and therapy groups may be open to current clients as well as new clients.

Groups:

  • Teen Girls Social Skills Group: for girls ages 15 to 18, focused on exploring the different social and life stressors they face

  • Mom Support Group: intended to offer adult women a place to connect with other moms, process and problem solve the challenges of juggling parenting and the responsibilities of daily life

Workshops:

  • Understanding Your Child's Anxiety: didactic 4 week workshop intended to increase your basic understanding of anxiety in children, resources available, and strategies for managing your own child's anxiety.

  • Parenting Workshop: a didactic 4-week program intended to increase your knowledge of the causes of behaviors, factors that complicate the parent-child relationship, and strategies for disciplining and parenting your child or teenager.

  •    Gearing Up for College: a 5-week workshop for High School Senior girls preparing to transition to their first year of college. This workshop is intended to address concerns about this exciting but anxiety-provoking transition, common stressors such as first year adjustment, home sickness, and managing social pressures to drink and navigate the college social scene. There will be a specific focus on female empowerment and self care.
